You May Be At Risk for Colon Cancer

There are a two things that you absolutely need to know about colon cancer.

It's abundant.

Over 93,000 new cases of colon cancer are diagnosed annually.
1 in 20 people will have colon cancer at some point in their lives.
Almost 60,000 people per year die from colon cancer, making it the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the US.

It's preventable.

Colon cancer incidence rates have dropped 30% from March of 2004 to March of 2014 in the United States, pimarily due to an increase in screening colonoscopies.
If colon cancer is detected in its early stages, the five-year survival is over 90%.
But only 59% of people ages 50 and older are getting screened.
Over 60% of deaths from colorectal cancer could be avoided with screening.

Do You Have an Increased Risk of Getting Colon Cancer?

The following are factors that can increase your risk of developing colon cancer:

Older age. Colonoscopy screenings are recommended for everyone ages 50 and older.
African-American race. African-Americans have a greater risk of colon cancer than do people of other races.
Personal history of colon cancer or polyps. A previous bout with colon cancer or the past detection of a polyp means a higher risk of developing
Inflammatory intestinal conditions. These include Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ulceratrive colitis, etc.
Low-fiber, high-fat diet. Colon cancer and rectal cancer may be associated with a diet low in fiber and high in fat and calories. Research in this area has had mixed results. Some studies have also found an increased risk of colon cancer in people who eat diets high in red meat.
Family history of colon cancer. If you have a parent, sibling, or child with the disease, you are at a heightened risk level of developing colon cancer.
Sedentary lifestyle. If you're inactive, you're more likely to develop colon cancer. Regular physical activity may reduce your risk.
Diabetes. People with diabetes and insulin resistance may have an increased risk of colon cancer.
Obesity. People who are obese have an increased risk of colon cancer.
Smoking. People who smoke cigarettes may have an increased risk of colon cancer.
Alcohol. Heavy consumption of alcohol may increase your risk of colon cancer.
